Giới thiệu đến độc giả bài của Thomas Sowell viết về Hussein Obama một kẻ giả hiệu "vĩ đại" (sic), một "tân Nhạc Bất Quần" của Mỹ quốc mà càng ngày, theo thời gian, điểm qua các thành tích, di sản TT Obama để lại và nhất là sự kêu gọi biểu tình và đánh phá chính quyền của TT đáo nhiệm chưa từng có tiền lệ, cho thấy giá trị nhận định của Thomas Sowell rất đáng đọc và phổ biến.

Nhiều năm trước, tôi là thành viên của một Uỷ Ban có trách nhiệm đề nghị những ai sẽ được cấp ngân khoản (grant) theo chương trình chính phủ. Bởi vì tôi biết một trong số những ứng viên này, nên đã đặt câu hỏi với ông Chủ Tịch Uỷ Ban, liệu rằng tôi có quyền không tham dự vào tiến trình bầu bán cho ứng viên ấy được không. Câu trả lời là không. Ông Chủ Tịch nói: Vì tôi cũng biết người này – và anh ta là một tên “giả hiệu vĩ đại của thời đại này”!

Người mà chúng tôi đề cập đến quả là một tay giả hiệu rất có tài năng. Anh ta có thể thuyết phục gần như hầu hết mọi người về hầu hết mọi đề tài – miễn rằng người nghe chưa biết sâu sắc về những đề tài đó.

Có một lần anh chàng Này nói với tôi một cách rất có thẩm quyền về Kinh tế Max Xít mà anh ta không ngờ rằng tôi là một trong số rất ít người có đọc về 3 quyển trong bộ sách Tư Bản Luận của Marx và đã từng xuất bản những bài bình luận về Kinh Tế Max Xít trong các tạp chí nghiên cứu.

Điều mà cái anh chàng lém lỉnh này có thể tạo ấn tượng với nhiều người chỉ là vì họ chưa từng đọc Tư Bản Luận. Và dĩ nhiên cái kiến thức của anh chàng này đối với tôi là vô nghĩa.

Ngẫu nhiên, trong kỳ đó, anh ta đã không được cấp cái grant mà anh ta muốn.

Vào một thời gian gần đây, màn kịch cỡm đó lại diễn ra với tôi khi tôi đọc một đoạn bình luận khá sắc bén của Charles Krauthammer, dẫn chứng ra vài khe hở trong những tuyên bố của Tổng Thống Hoa Kỳ (là chính hắn).

Một trong những khe hở mang tầm mức quốc gia với một tính cách đặc biệt khiến thiên hạ tìm ra lý lẽ trong những điều khác ngoài những liên quan đến đảo Falkland Islands.

Argentina vừa mới đây lại yêu cầu Anh Quốc hãy trả lại đảo Falkland Islands cho họ sau khi đã chiếm đóng từ gần 2 thế kỷ. Vào năm 1982, thì Argentina đã chiếm lại đảo này bằng vũ lực, để rồi lại bị Thủ Tướng Anh Quốc là Margaret Thatcher chiếm lại từ tay Argentina cũng bằng vũ lực.

Ngày nay Argentina bị những rối rắm nội bộ, thì việc đòi lại đảo Falklands lại một lần nữa là cách để chính phủ xoay hướng chú ý của quần chúng ra khỏi các vấn đề tồi tệ của kinh tế và guồng máy chính quyền.

Bởi vì người Argentines gọi những đảo này là the Malvinas, chứ không gọi là the Falklands, như quốc tế đang dùng theo Anh ngữ. Tổng Thống Obama nhà ta quyết định gọi theo cách của người Á Căn Đình. Nhưng khổ thay, Barack Obama đã gọi từ đó thành ra là the Maldives.

Thực sự ra là Maldives cách xa đó khoảng hàng ngàn dặm trong Ấn Độ Dương trong khi đảo Malvinas (Falklands) lại ở phía Nam của Đại Tây Dương (Atlantic).

Đây không chỉ là một lỗi lầm nho nhỏ mà tông tông nhà ta đã qua mặt dân Mỹ. Còn nhiều chuyện khác nữa cơ. Nhưng nhờ truyền thông Phe ta vốn là Phe Tả sẵn sàng bao che cho Chàng. Cái gì Obama nói ra cũng không có gì sai trật quá đáng để phải nêu lên báo chí hay truyền hình!

Có lần Obama gọi military corps (binh đoàn) thành ra military corpse (những thây ma quân đội). Tông tông nhà ta thường không chú ý đến nhiều điều trong quá khứ. Cái phát âm của một người từng được khen là hùng biện mà lại cẩu thả trong khi phát âm những từ quen thuộc khi nhắc đến một người từng ở Thuỷ Quân Lục Chiến thay vì là Marine Corps, lại thành ra Marine corpse.

Cũng như những tên giả hiệu có tài năng khác, thì Barack Obama tập trung kỷ năng của mình vào sức ảnh hưởng đối với người nghe, miễn sao những người nghe đó không có thì giờ để tìm hiểu sâu sắc hơn về những đề tài mà Barack Obama đề cập đến. Cho dù những điều Obama nói có liên quan đến sự thật bao nhiêu, thì nó cũng chẳng liên quan đến chính trị.

Một tên lường gạt, một chính trị gia khéo lời thì không phí thì giờ đi thuyết phục những kẻ có kiến thức và không hề tin mình. Mà công việc của anh ta là nhằm đi thuyết phục những kẻ đang tin vào anh ta. Anh ta sẽ không bao giờ đi thuyết phục những kẻ vốn đã chẳng tin để làm gì.

Vào khoảng năm đầu tiên khi Barack Obama vào Bạch Cung, thì ông ta luôn lập đi lập lại, với một giọng thành khẩn, rằng những dự án đã sẵn sàng sẽ nhanh chóng tạo công ăn việc làm, nếu như Quốc Hội sẵn sàng để chi tiền.

Obama trông rất thuyết phục, nhưng chỉ với điều kiện là người nghe ông ta chẳng biết gì, rằng một dự án xây dựng phải mất một thời gian dài, phải qua nhiều thủ tục bàn giấy cùng những nghiên cứu về môi trường, những luật tắc về zoning cùng qua những thủ tục có thể kéo dài, cho dù là những dự án nhỏ, có khi kéo cho đến nhiều năm.

Chỉ khoảng chừng 1 năm, sau khi Quốc Hội đã chuẩn chi một số tiền lớn cho các chương trình của mình, thì chính Obama cũng đã cười vào trình tự rùa bò chậm chạp mà ông ta gọi là Shovel-ready, tức là cuốc xuổng đã sẵn sàng, thế mà chẳng tiến triển bao nhiêu cả.

Người ta cũng tự hỏi Obama sẽ cười ra sao khi những lời hứa hẹn vàng son về chương trình ObamaCare bây giờ vỡ lẻ ra chỉ là một công trình giả mạo và là một thiên tai về Y Tế Quốc gia! Và còn nữa, các chính sách ngoại giao ở Trung Đông của Obama lại đưa Iran lên dỉnh cao để trở thành là một đe doạ nguyên tử!

A Truly Great Phony

Many years ago, I was a member of a committee that was recommending to whom grant money should be awarded. Since I knew one of the applicants, I asked if this meant that I should recuse myself from voting on his application.

"No," the chairman said. "I know him too -- and he is one of the truly great phonies of our time."

The man was indeed a very talented phony. He could convince almost anybody of almost anything -- provided that they were not already knowledgeable about the subject.

He had once spoken to me very authoritatively about Marxian economics, apparently unaware that I was one of the few people who had read all three volumes of Marx's "Capital," and had published articles on Marxian economics in scholarly journals.

What our glib talker was saying might have seemed impressive to someone who had never read "Capital," as most people have not. But it was complete nonsense to me.

Incidentally, he did not get the grant he applied for.

This episode came back to me recently, as I read an incisive column by Charles Krauthammer, citing some of the many gaffes in public statements by the President of the United States.

One presidential gaffe in particular gives the flavor, and suggests the reason, for many others. It involved the Falkland Islands.

Argentina has recently been demanding that Britain return the Falkland Islands, which have been occupied by Britons for nearly two centuries. In 1982, Argentina seized these islands by force, only to have British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher take the islands back by force.

With Argentina today beset by domestic problems, demanding the return of the Falklands is once again a way for Argentina's government to distract the Argentine public's attention from the country's economic and other woes.

Because the Argentines call these islands "the Malvinas," rather than "the Falklands," Barack Obama decided to use the Argentine term. But he referred to them as "the Maldives."

It so happens that the Maldives are thousands of miles away from the Malvinas. The former are in the Indian Ocean, while the latter are in the South Atlantic.

Nor is this the only gross misstatement that President Obama has gotten away with, thanks to the mainstream media, which sees no evil, hears no evil and speaks no evil when it comes to Obama.

The presidential gaffe that struck me when I heard it was Barack Obama's reference to a military corps as a military "corpse." He is obviously a man who is used to sounding off about things he has paid little or no attention to in the past. His mispronunciation of a common military term was especially revealing to someone who was once in the Marine Corps, not Marine "corpse."

Like other truly talented phonies, Barack Obama concentrates his skills on the effect of his words on other people -- most of whom do not have the time to become knowledgeable about the things he is talking about. Whether what he says bears any relationship to the facts is politically irrelevant.

A talented con man, or a slick politician, does not waste his time trying to convince knowledgeable skeptics. His job is to keep the true believers believing. He is not going to convince the others anyway.

Back during Barack Obama's first year in office, he kept repeating, with great apparent earnestness, that there were "shovel-ready" projects that would quickly provide many much-needed jobs, if only his spending plans were approved by Congress.

He seemed very convincing -- if you didn't know how long it can take for any construction project to get started, after going through a bureaucratic maze of environmental impact studies, zoning commission rulings and other procedures that can delay even the smallest and simplest project for years.

Only about a year or so after his big spending programs were approved by Congress, Barack Obama himself laughed at how slowly everything was going on his supposedly "shovel-ready" projects.

One wonders how he will laugh when all his golden promises about ObamaCare turn out to be false and a medical disaster. Or when his foreign policy fiascoes in the Middle East are climaxed by a nuclear Iran.

Biography

Thomas Sowell, born 1930/06/3, is an American economist, social theorist, political philosopher, and author.

Thomas Sowell was born in North Carolina and grew up in Harlem. As with many others in his neighborhood, Thomas Sowell left home early and did not finish high school. The next few years were difficult ones, but eventually he joined the Marine Corps and became a photographer in the Korean War. After leaving the service, Thomas Sowell entered Harvard University, worked a part-time job as a photographer and studied the science that would become his passion and profession: economics.

After graduating magna cum laude from Harvard University (1958), Thomas Sowell went on to receive his master's in economics from Columbia University (1959) and a doctorate in economics from the University of Chicago (1968).

In the early '60s, Sowell held jobs as an economist with the Department of Labor and AT&T. But his real interest was in teaching and scholarship. In 1965, at Cornell University, Sowell began the first of many professorships. Thomas Sowell's other teaching assignments include Rutgers University, Amherst College, Brandeis University and the University of California at Los Angeles, where he taught in the early '70s and also from 1984 to 1989.

Thomas Sowell has published a large volume of writing. His dozen books, as well as numerous articles and essays, cover a wide range of topics, from classic economic theory to judicial activism, from civil rights to choosing the right college. Moreover, much of his writing is considered ground-breaking -- work that will outlive the great majority of scholarship done today.

Though Thomas Sowell had been a regular contributor to newspapers in the late '70s and early '80s, he did not begin his career as a newspaper columnist until 1984. George F. Will's writing, says Sowell, proved to him that someone could say something of substance in so short a space (750 words). And besides, writing for the general public enables him to address the heart of issues without the smoke and mirrors that so often accompany academic writing.

In 1990, he won the prestigious Francis Boyer Award, presented by The American Enterprise Institute.

He is currently Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. Sowell was born in North Carolina, but grew up in Harlem, New York. He dropped out of high school and served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He received a bachelor’s degree, graduating magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1958 and a master’s degree from Columbia University in 1959. In 1968, he earned his Doctorate in Economics from the University of Chicago.

Sowell has served on the faculties of several universities, including Cornell University and University of California, Los Angeles. He has also worked for think tanks such as the Urban Institute. Since 1980, he has worked at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. He writes from a libertarian conservative perspective, advocating supply-side economics. Sowell has written more than thirty books (a number of which have been reprinted in revised editions), and his work has been widely anthologized. He is a National Humanities Medal recipient.
